Hemp foods are becoming more refined with new and interesting ways to add the incredible health benefits of the hemp to your diet. The labeling and legality of hemp-related products have often confused consumers. To be clear, the hemp foods in reference here are free of CBD, meaning that they contain no CBD. However, there are foods in the hemp foods category that do have CBD. So, before discussing the health benefits and various hemp foods, let’s quickly look at the labeling.
Does it have CBD or not? What is the difference between hemp oil and hemp seed oil? Hemp is cannabis, so does it have THC? Quickly, we can negate THC products from the question because they have very strict labeling laws and are not openly sold on the Internet in the United States. The terms “hemp oil” and “hemp extract(s)” are often used interchangeably to indicate either hemp seed oil or hemp oil that does have CBD. The easiest way to tell the difference is the labeling. Often, if there is CBD, the label may use the phrasing “full-spectrum” when referencing hemp oil. Yet, this is not always the case. However, if the label gives you a hemp compound with a measurement listed in milligrams, that is CBD. Like THC, it must be labeled to show how much of the component is in a serving. Finally, if it is only hemp seed oil or any hemp-derived ingredient without THC and/or CBD, because it is simply a non-drug ingredient which follows different labeling laws, it will not be shown on the label in milligrams.
Even without THC or CBD, hemp foods have important health benefits. It is commonly known that hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are great sources of protein. What was surprising to learn is that hemp protein has all nine essential amino acids. Also commonly known is that hemp foods are high in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. It is interesting to note that hemp seed oil has the ideal ration of omega-6 to omega-3, which is 3:1. Furthermore, hemp foods also have gamma-linolenic acid. Altogether, the abundant and varied amino acids and essential fatty acids deliver health benefits such as calming skin disorders, pain relief, promotes heart and brain health, as well as reducing symptoms of PMS and menopause while also supporting healthy pregnancies.
Now, let’s look at some fun and delicious new ways hemp could be added to your diet. The most commonly used forms of hemp found in foods are hemp seed oil and hemp seeds (with and without the shells) as well as hemp milk.
